Most visitors to Istanbul experience the Whirling Dervish ceremony as part of a public event — seated alongside other guests in a ceremony hall, sharing the experience with strangers who have come from all corners of the world. For many, this communal dimension is part of what makes the evening so memorable.
But for some occasions — a corporate event, a wedding celebration, a milestone birthday, an incentive group, or a private gathering of family and friends — the idea of a dedicated, exclusive ceremony is exactly right. A ceremony shaped around your group, in a setting you have chosen, at a time that suits you.
This guide explains everything you need to know about arranging a private Whirling Dervish ceremony in Istanbul.

What Is a Private Ceremony?
A private Mevlevi Sema ceremony is a dedicated performance of the full Whirling Dervish ritual, arranged exclusively for your group. Unlike a public ceremony, where tickets are sold individually to guests from the general public, a private ceremony is reserved in its entirety for your party.
The ceremony follows the same structure as the public performance — the Naat, the Ney taksimi, the four Selams, and the closing prayer — performed by genuine Mevlevi practitioners with live traditional music. What changes is the context: your group has exclusive use of the semahane or chosen venue for the duration of the event.

Who Is a Private Ceremony Right For?
Corporate groups and incentive travel. Istanbul is one of the world's great incentive travel destinations, and a private Whirling Dervish ceremony is among the most distinctive cultural experiences available in the city. It offers something genuinely memorable — far removed from the standard conference dinner or city sightseeing tour — and speaks powerfully to international guests about the depth and sophistication of Turkish culture.
Wedding celebrations. For couples celebrating their wedding in Istanbul, or for wedding parties seeking an extraordinary evening experience, a private ceremony offers something rare: a spiritual, beautiful, and deeply human experience that guests will talk about for years. The ceremony can be scheduled as a standalone event or as part of a larger evening.
Milestone birthdays and anniversaries. A significant birthday or anniversary deserves a significant experience. A private Sema ceremony, arranged for close family and friends, creates a memory that no restaurant dinner or rooftop party can match.
Educational and cultural groups. Schools, universities, cultural organizations, and study tours regularly arrange private ceremonies as a core part of their Istanbul itinerary. The ceremony can be accompanied by an extended introduction and discussion, making it an ideal educational experience.
Film, photography, and media production. The Whirling Dervish ceremony is one of the most visually extraordinary things in Istanbul. Documentary filmmakers, photographers, and media productions regularly arrange private access for their work.

What Can Be Customized?
A private ceremony can be adapted in a number of ways to suit your group and occasion:
Pre-ceremony introduction. We can arrange an extended cultural introduction — explaining the history of the Mevlevi Order, the meaning of the ceremony, and the symbolism of the dervishes' attire — tailored to your audience. This can be delivered in English, Turkish, Arabic, or Spanish.
Photography and filming. Private ceremonies offer more flexibility around documentation than public performances. If your event requires photography or video recording, this can be discussed and arranged in advance.
Hospitality. We can arrange traditional Ottoman hospitality for your guests — sherbet, Turkish tea, light refreshments — as part of the private event.
Timing. Private ceremonies can be scheduled outside of the regular public performance times, including daytime slots or later evening arrangements, subject to availability.
Capacity. Our ceremony hall accommodates up to 300 guests. Private ceremonies can be arranged for groups of varying sizes — from intimate gatherings of 20 or 30 people to large corporate events.

How to Arrange a Private Ceremony
The process is straightforward:
Contact us early. Private ceremonies require coordination with our practitioners and musicians, and availability is limited. We recommend contacting us at least two to four weeks before your desired date, and further in advance for large groups or complex requirements.
Tell us about your group. The more we know about your group — size, purpose, any specific requirements — the better we can tailor the experience. Is it a corporate group? A family celebration? An educational visit? Are any of your guests familiar with Sufi tradition, or will most be encountering it for the first time?
Discuss your requirements. We will walk through all the elements of the ceremony with you — timing, introduction, hospitality, photography, and anything else that matters to your event.
Confirm and book. Once the details are agreed, we confirm your booking and begin preparing for your event.

A Note on Authenticity
We are sometimes asked whether a private ceremony is "less authentic" than a public one — whether the ceremony loses something when it is arranged for a specific group rather than open to the general public.
The honest answer is no. As we have written elsewhere, the Mevlevi ceremony has always been performed in front of an audience. What matters is not the composition of that audience but the quality of the practitioners and the integrity of the ritual. Our private ceremonies are performed by the same genuine Mevlevi practitioners who lead our public performances, following the same traditional structure, with the same live music.
What a private ceremony offers is not a lesser version of the Sema. It is the same ceremony, in an environment shaped around your group.
